Helping our youth to Love, Share, Invite

President Nelson in our recent general conference stated that, “The gospel of Jesus Christ has never been needed more than it is today.” He goes on to say that, “Every person who has made covenants with God has promised to care about others and serve those in need . . . each of us has a role to play in the gathering of Israel.” As we strive to apply the principles of “Love, Share, Invite” it is important that we teach our children and youth to do the same. President Nelson has made it clear that, “The Lord has asked every worthy, able young man to prepare for and serve a mission . . .for young able sisters, a mission is also a powerful, but optional, opportunity.” President M. Russell Ballard, in that same conference stated, “Fathers and mothers of these wonderful youth, you have a vital role in this preparation process. Begin today to talk with your children about missionary service. We know that the family is the most profound influence in helping our young men and young women prepare.”

How do young men and young women best prepare for a mission?

Attitude is the key. Young people need to commit themselves early in life to the idea of a mission. That way, when they get older and begin to face some of the world’s temptations, those temptations will be less likely to penetrate their hearts or minds. They will resist the temptations because they are focused on becoming a servant of the Lord. It helps if they live in a gospel-sharing home. A missionary spirit is generated in a home where parents and children share the gospel with one another.

Find ways to practice “Love, Share, Invite” as a family. As your children see you practicing this it will be easier for them. Encourage them to invite their friends to basic family/church events. Encourage youth to go out with the full time missionaries serving in our area. Be examples of Loving our neighbors, finding ways to share positive gospel experiences with others, and inviting others to participate with us.
