Who is my Neighbor?

Just Serve

From the New Testament, we learn “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.” A certain lawyer then asked Christ. “Who is my neighbour?” (Luke 10:27-29)

Have you ever asked yourself who your neighbor is? How can I be a better neighbor? As members of His restored church, we do a pretty good job of helping our neighbors. This last month we as a stake participated in helping out our neighbors by donating blood and donating food to the San Juan School districts Food program. We know from King Benjamin’s address “when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.” (Mosiah 2:17) But can we do better?

From Elder Oaks’ talk, “Helping the Poor and Distressed” in the first talk of this past General Conference. He reminded us that, “‘God is using more than one people for the accomplishment of his great and marvelous work. … It is too vast, too arduous, for any one people.’ As members of the restored Church, we need to be more aware and more appreciative of the service of others. The Church of Jesus Christ is committed to serving those in need, and it is also committed to cooperating with others in that effort.” One way the church is helping us in our efforts to help our neighbors and join with others in our community who are also following the Savior, who is “the true light that lighteth every man that cometh into the world,” is through JustServe. May the spirit guide you in our efforts to be better neighbors by serving in areas we may not have thought of before. May we “follow the example of a righteous people described in the Book of Mormon: ‘And thus, in their prosperous circumstances, they did not send away any who were naked, or that were hungry, or that were athirst, or that were sick, … and they … were liberal to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, whether out of the church or in the church.’”
